Technical Data

Please read our technical data on the products we have on our website. This is a general overview on how they work, what they do, health & safety & the purpose and uses of block paving sealers.

Product description

Block paving sealer (solvent) is a clear, UV light stable solution designed to penetrate the surface of block paving and other concrete products. (sealers with added colour pigments are available for printed concrete and very old block paving)

Purpose

Block paving sealer has been designed to seal the surface of the paving to improve the aesthetic appearance of blocks, paving slabs and other concrete products. They provide a barrier to contaminants thereby facilitating easy maintenance. The sealed surface will increase abrasion resistance and also protect the jointing sand from erosion and weed infestation.

Special Properties

Reduces sand loss from joints by setting the kind dried joint sand hard. Reduces efflorescence in the pavers. Ultra-violet light and weather resistant to help stop the fading of coloured concrete paving blocks. Inhibits the growth of moss and weeds in the joints of the pavers. Enhances the colour of the paving. Facilitates the easy removal of oil and other contamination if spilt once the surface has been sealed. Will not blister or peel if used correctly and not applied onto paving that has already been sealed with a different sealer.

Application Instructions

(please check application instructions & all technical data supplied on product before application. This is because some block paving sealers may have different application instructions)

Block paving sealer can be applied using a Viton sprayer unit or a suitable roller & tray, at a rate of approx. 3m² per litre (dependant on absorbency of paving and joint sand). A two coat application is required to fully cover the jointing sand. Block paving sealer should be tack free within 3 hours at 20ºC and foot traffic may be permitted after 6 hours. Vehicles should be kept off the sealed area for a minimum of 24 hours at 20ºC. These times may be increased or reduced depending on the ambient temperature. During the curing cycle, protect from rain. Do not apply when the ground temperature is above 30ºC or below 5ºC. All equipment should be cleaned with the appropriate cleaner. If using a solvent based cleaner then use a solvent cleaner after use. Always check the manufactures instructions (usually on the side of the container) before commencing any work with block paving sealers.

Preparation Instructions

New block paving should be left for a minimum period of 8 weeks before paving sealer is applied (this is to check for no development of efflorescence, a white blooming on the surface). Block paving should be swept clean, ensuring there is sufficient well-compacted sand in the joints. Existing paving should be pressure washed to remove all surface debris. If the area is contaminated with weeds and moss then it should be treated with a suitable weed killer or appropriate cleaner that will also kill the weeds. Make sure all traces of green algae is removed as the sealer won’t penetrate the surface is algae is present. Oil and other stains should be removed using a block paving oil remover. The treated area should then be left to dry and the joints re-sanded and compacted to the lower edge of the paver chamfers with clean kiln-dried sand. Moisture in the paver and sand will inhibit penetration of the sealer and produce a whiteness trapped under the sealer. Always check to see if the joint sand has thoroughly dried before applying the block paving sealer.

Health and Safety technical data

If it is a solvent based (flammable liquid) block paving sealer then please follow these instructions. Do not smoke or use a naked flame. Keep application area well ventilated. Wear a respirator and appropriate gloves when applying. Store in a cool place. Always read and refer to the Health and Safety Data Sheet for further information that you should get with your sealer. If the sealer is water based then please wear protective gloves and again always follow instructions and Health and Safety Data Sheet for further information.
